Tips To Help Your Deck Through Winter

First comes falling leaves then comes the holidays and we are here to give you everything you need to keep that wood protected!

While we don't get much UV exposure in our climate during the winter months, there are still plenty of factors affecting the life of your deck (and longevity of our treatment) when the weather turns chilly.

The number one issue is moisture retention. When moisture gets into your deck boards via rain, snow, sleet or hail and then freezes, the expansion of that moisture causes a variety of problems.

You'll often see splitting, warping and scaling after a harsh winter and in the case of older decks, complete rot. This is why it is so vital to treat your deck with a water-repellant on a regular basis.

Aside from sealing/staining your deck to protect the wood, take these steps to further prolong the life of your investment:

  1. As leaves begin to fall in autumn, regularly blow them off your deck. Do NOT let leaves sit in a pile over the winter as they will permanently stain the wood and cause mold/algae growth.

  2. Avoid using a metal-tipped snow shovel to clear a path for humans and pets. Use a rubber-tipped shovel or better yet, a push broom.

  3. Under no circumstances use rock salt. The chemicals interact with the stain and essentially strip it from the wood.

Keep in mind we offer a spring cleaning service starting at $125 to freshen up your deck for the new season.
